Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism following their first encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the pontiff's decision to meet with them so early in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Strict Approach Advocated

The organization is advocating for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in spring, has inherited this persistent issue that has haunted the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic meeting on child abuse within the institution and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is personal. The North American activist revealed they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we want to work with him," they expressed. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Seven members of the coalition, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a female survivor abused at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own experience and seemed "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is advocating that changes to canon law will enable the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled materials that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," they noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "necessity of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they told the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, Hickey expressed optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a move in the correct path," Hickey commented.

They concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
